Natural Healing From Anemia

Are you iron deficient? As a mom of 5 there have been plenty of times that I have been diagnosed with anemia. The same thing happens every time, I go for a check up to the doctor, he orders blood tests, tells me I am anemic and to go and buy an iron supplement from the drug store. The problem is, I don’t like paying for drugs, I don’t want my kids to accidentally get into the bottle of iron pills and almost die (happened to my big sister) and I think there are better ways to heal naturally from anemia. In fact, taking iron supplements from the drug store is not absorbed easily and puts a strain on your internal organs.

So, with that in mind I’ve decided to do a post on Natural Healing from Anemia. If you are anemic, you are not alone. More than 3 million American’s have anemia! According to the US department of health and services:

What is Anemia?

Spinach is high in iron

Anemia” (uh-NEE-mee-uh) occurs when you have less than the normal number of red blood cells in your blood or when the red blood cells in your blood don’t have enough hemoglobin (HEE-muh-gloh-bin). Hemoglobin is a protein. It gives the red color to your blood. Its main job is to carry oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body. If you have anemia, your blood does not carry enough oxygen to all the parts of your body. Without oxygen, your organs and tissues cannot work as well as they should.

Am I Anemic?

Probably the most noticeable symptom of anemia is tiredness. Even after a full nights sleep you don’t feel rested. Feelings of dizziness or light headiness can also be early indicators of anemia.

When you are anemic your symptoms can worsen, and new ones can develop. You may pale in your skin, your lips may start to loose their red color and look bluish. Your heart may race and you might be out of breath frequently.

So, on to the good stuff, if you are anemic here are some great foods that you can take to naturally heal from your anemia. They are packed full of natural sources of iron.

There are two types of iron — heme comes from meat sources, while non-home iron comes from plant and herbal sources. What are the best foods to eat when you have an iron deficiency?

Sources of heme iron

  • Chicken liver, beef liver
  • Oysters (with which you should be careful if you are pregnant)
  • Tongue, if you can stomach it
  • Various parts of turkey
  • Shrimp and crab

Sources of non-home iron, suitable for vegetarians

  • Parsley
  • Nettles (which are an excellent source of iron as well as almost any other mineral and vitamin, and can be very pleasant to drink as a tea)
  • Spinach and other leafy greens
  • Kelp
  • Lentils, and beans — including soybeans and soy products like tofu
  • Raisins

If you are feeling tired or having symptoms of anemia, I would recommend taking iron supplements from the store at the same time as  increasing the amounts of iron rich foods in your diet. This will allow your body to heal as quickly as possible. As soon as you are no longer anemic you can maintain the iron in your body exclusively through foods. Natural Healing from Anemia using foods is effective and safe.

The If you are low on iron, you should also avoid the following foods which deplete the iron in your body: Coffee, Non-Herbal Teas, too much bran. Also, it’s good to know that taking Vitamin C with your iron rich foods will increase the absorption of the iron into your body.

Have you ever suffered from Anemia? I’d love to know what helped you the most…
