What Is Prayer?
Prayer is a communication process between man and God. Prayer is the most safe, effective, affordable and powerful method of healing known to man, and has been used since the beginning of time. The basic assumption that there is a God and He allows us to talk to him is essential to using prayers as a form of natural healing.
Prayer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q – What is the connection between fasting and prayer? What effect does fasting have on prayers?
A. The act of fasting is the act of abstaining from food and drink so as to enjoy a time of uninterrupted communion with our Father. The theology of fasting is a principle of priorities in which those believing are given the chance to express themselves in an intense and undivided devotion to the Lord and to the concerns of spiritual life. Our “confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus” (Hebrews 10:19), whether fasting or not, is one of the most enjoyable parts of that “better thing” which is ours in Christ. Prayer and fasting should not be a burden or cause pain, but rather be a true celebration of God’s goodness and mercy to His children.
Q – What is the Science behind Prayer?
A – Probably the experiment cited most often by advocates of prayer is the one performed by Byrd, a cardiologist at San Francisco General Medical Center. According to his report, he studied 393 patients between August 1982 and May 1983. He divided the group into 192 patients who were prayed for, and 201 who were not prayed for. He reported that, among other things, the people who were prayed for were five times less likely to develop pulmonary edema. None required endotracheal intubation, and fewer patients died.
Q – How should I Pray?
A – Pray earnestly, sincerely, with real intent, and with all the energy and strength of your soul. The Lord’s prayer as recorded in New Testament provides a clear example of how to pray.
A key element to improved communication with God is to learn to ask the right questions. A simple prayer can be outlined as follows:
- Opening: Address God
- Thanks: Express thanks
- Ask: Ask for what we need
- Closing: End the prayer with Amen.
Q – Is Prayer effective?
A –Prayer is the most effective tool for healing known to man. Prayer is more effective when we are striving to live a morally clean and virtuous life or in harmony with teachings that promote honesty, integrity, charity, and love for oneself and others.
Q – How are prayers answered?
A – Often when we pray for help with a significant matter, Heavenly Father will give us gentle promptings that require us to think, exercise faith, work, at times struggle, then act. It is a step-by-step process that enables us to discern inspired answers. Prayers may come at a much later time, and are seldom answered immediately. When we succumb our will
to God’s we are trusting in His judgment and timing. While sometimes it’s very hard to allow this natural process to take place, it results in significant personal growth.
Q – Do you have to believe in God to pray?
A. Clearly prayer is most effective when you understand and have faith in the higher power you are praying to. Although prayers may be answered if you believe in God or not, it stands to reason that preference will be given to those that have turned their lives over to God in all areas of their life.
Q – What is the relationship between humility and prayer?
A. Humility is an aspect of the divine and access to God through prayer is granted or withheld according the presence or absence of humility. One who comes to God in prayer without humility is surely insulting the Great Creator. If we are to engage God in the intimacy of prayer we must display the qualities of spirit that would connect us to Him. Humble, trusting prayer brings direction and peace.
