Natural Healing Wheatgrass Helps Fight Breast Cancer and More

For years, my parents used to grow trays of wheatgrass and grind out the green elixir that I thought was absolutely disgusting. I could barely even gulp the stuff down. Well it seems that after scientific probing, my parents may have been right about how healthy it was. Actually it spells good news –  for we have some hard evidence that wheatgrass helps fight breast cancer…and more!

Wheatgrass proves amazing for Breast cancer and ulcerative colitis

While natural health advocates have been lauding the healing properties of wheat grass for over sixty years, it is only fairly recently that a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study has been done to scientifically “prove” the effectiveness of wheat grass juice. The April 2002 issue ofScandinavian Journal of Gastroenterologyreports that patients who were clinically diagnosed with active distal ulcerative colitis were given either 100cc wheat grass juice or a placebo for a month. Participants kept a diary, while clinicians examined the patients for any changes. Of the patients who fully completed the study, all of them showed a significant reduction in disease activity. Researchers surmised that this was due to the antioxidant properties contained in wheat grass juice.

Breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy were given wheat grass juice to observe if wheat grass juice might inhibit myelotoxicity. Myelotoxicity is bone marrow suppression, where the cells which are responsible for immunity, blood clotting, and delivering oxygen are decreased. Myelotoxicity is life-threatening. The breast cancer patients were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received 60cc wheat grass juice daily, while the control group did not. A full 50% of the control group was not able to complete the study due to “censoring events.” Only 16.67% of the wheat grass juice group was not able to complete the study. While the control group patients were “censored” largely due to white blood cell counts, the wheat grass juice patients were “censored” due to an increase in nausea. These results were enough for the researchers to suggest that wheat grass juice may be able to reduce myelotoxicity, even during chemotherapy.

Even after all that there still remains the problem of the taste. I don’t think I’m ready to go out and buy a wheatgrass grinding juicer any time soon. So I started to think what else could I do to put some green goodness down the hatch? Try it with other juices of course:

Wheatgrass Juice Recipe

As an alternative to drinking in neat, you can also add it to freshly squeezed apple juice. I like the following recipe for apple, celery, lemon and wheatgrass juice.

Ingredients

  • 2 apples
  • 2 stems of celery
  • half a lemon
  • 3 bunches of wheatgrass – enough to make 2oz (60ml)of wheatgrass juice.

How to Make

  1. Wash the fruit and vegetables
  2. Core the apples, and peel the lemon. If the lemon is organic and you like a really strong lemon taste then leave the peel on.
  3. Chop apples, celery, and lemon to fit your juicer
  4. Juice the wheatgrass in your wheatgrass juicer.
  5. Juice the apples, lemon, and celery.
  6. Serve and enjoy.
